While in Ohio recently, I took a tour of Edison Pen Co. outside the town of Huron, makers of high-quality fully customized fountain pens. They are only one of two fountain pen manufacturers in Ohio. Thanks to the owner, Brian Gray, and his staff for taking the time to show me around. Check them out at edisonpen.com.

Just returned from the national meeting of the Geological Society of America in Phoenix, AZ. I'm proud of my students, Leslie Young and Maritza Montoya, who presented results of their work in Big Bend Ranch State Park. Dr. Martz, Dr. Heinlein, and I presented as well. It was a great meeting!

Jeff Martz and I just received an NSF grant to upgrade the existing ICP-OES facilities here at UHD. The grant also includes funds to continue our study of tectonics and alkaline magmatism in the Big Bend region of west Texas. The goal of this part of the grant is to involve community college transfer students at UHD in field- and laboratory-based research in an effort to improve retention and graduation rates in the geosciences.
